Gulbenkian Study Centres

The Gulbenkian Study Centres provide high-quality learning opportunities for students attending schools in disadvantaged neighbourhoods and areas.

Developed in partnership with local community spaces, the initiative offers children and young people in primary through secondary education a place to learn and grow after school and during school holidays.

Through this initiative, the Gulbenkian Foundation seeks to promote academic success and help reduce educational inequalities in vulnerable contexts.

Pilot Projects

Padre Cruz Neighbourhood, Carnide

Zambujal Neighbourhood, Alfragide

Vale da Amoreira, Moita

Objectives

  • Test a model of learning support in disadvantaged areas
  • Strengthen the relationship between schools, families, and communities
  • Create opportunities for the personal and social development of children and young people
  • Value and involve local communities in building sustainable educational solutions

Approach

The Gulbenkian Study Centres model combines several complementary dimensions:

Personalised academic support

Tutoring in Portuguese, Mathematics, and English, provided by qualified teachers and tutors.

School–family–community connection

Building bridges between the different contexts in which children live, fostering positive interactions and enabling the early identification of risk behaviours.

Mentorship

Guidance from trusted young people and adults – including Gulbenkian Scholars – who help develop social and emotional skills.

Cultural and discovery activities

Extracurricular programmes that broaden horizons, such as study visits, cultural experiences, and activities beyond the neighbourhood.
