Cultural Democracy

Promoting access to and participation in culture, placing communities at the heart of decision-making processes and in leadership roles.

In recent years, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has sought to promote cultural access and participation through partnerships and support for organizations that work with the direct involvement of local communities, placing them at the center of decision-making processes and in leadership of initiatives.

This approach aims to strengthen the implementation of participatory and democratic tools and methodologies that contribute to reinforcing local grassroots governance and the cultural activation of the territories in which they operate. Processes led by and for communities have greater potential to ensure sustainable and long-lasting action in these territories.

Through these strategic partnerships and support, the aim is to foster a diverse cultural offering that reflects social realities and reinforces the sense of belonging among those who create it, thereby contributing to the practice of cultural democracy.
