The excessive love of painter couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera is the narrative centre of composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera. With an original libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz, El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego follows an inversion of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, with Frida leaving the world of the dead for a final farewell to Diego. The score, directed by conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, was praised by the New Yorker magazine for its “confidence and rich imagination”, while Deborah Colker’s staging and choreography emphasise the atmosphere of magical realism.
