NCVO Annual Conference: Impact Workshop
Impact: from measurement to leadership workshop
Andrew Barnett, Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s UK Branch and Richard Piper, Director of the Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity held a well-attended workshop on Impact Leadership at the Annual Conference of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations on 5 of March 2012.
Richard Piper discussed the importance of impact over measurement and how charity leaders can benefit by creating an impact culture; setting clear and specific impacts that ought to be achieved; delivering such impacts; and gathering information to learn, improve and communicate the lessons.
Andrew Barnett outlined how the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has sought to maximise impact through the principles of championing transformation over the transactional approach, innovating, programme involvement and acting internationally. He also stressed that measurement is inextricably linked to impact in order to demonstrate what is being achieved and to take lessons from impact to expand and increase it.
He argued that programme effectiveness goes beyond evaluation and that other areas should be taken into consideration such as scoping to identify need and opportunity; demonstrating what works through pilot projects; raising awareness about social needs/challenges and persuading audiences about the need for change; building coalitions; and learning to improve and benefit a wider audience.
