Partnership Principles

The Foundation focuses its resources where needs are greatest and where we can have the most significant impact. Building on our strengths, we continually strive to adopt best practices in philanthropy. Our grant-making is guided by the following principles.

Long-term thinking

We set long-term goals, address root causes, and invest in the enablers of change rather than just alleviating symptoms. Like many large independent foundations, we adopt a forward-looking approach, seeking impact that extends beyond political cycles and market fluctuations.

International impact

Our founder envisioned a Foundation to benefit “all of humanity.” Through our work in Portugal, the UK, and France, and our collaborations with funders and stakeholders in various countries, we seek to deliver impact at both national and international levels.

Acting systemically

We aim for transformational change and recognise that we operate in a complex ecosystem. Systems—and their associated challenges and solutions—tend to cross national borders and disciplinary lines. By working across disciplines and promoting collaborative, cross-sector approaches, we position ourselves to act systemically.

Cultural and scientific heritage

Our experience lies in translating ideas into action through cultural and scientific programmes. We value the roles of both arts and science in advancing societies and enhancing lives, promoting the combined importance of culture and knowledge.

Convening power and partnerships

We have a strong record of uniting partners and engaging communities across our focal regions, as well as with international foundations to exchange insights, learning and best practice. This enables us to think globally, and act locally. We value evidence-based approaches, believing that while solutions exist, addressing complex global problems demands flexibility, creativity, and responsiveness.

We recognise that we cannot achieve anything alone. We all play different roles in a complex ecosystem. The Foundation is committed to collaboration and working in partnership with other trusts and foundations, and other stakeholders.
