Our Funding Approach

The UK Branch supports initiatives within the Foundation’s Access to Culture and Climate and Ocean programmes. Working internationally with partners in the UK, Portugal and beyond, we aim to increase access to culture and expand engagement in climate action and ocean protection.

An interactive funding approach

The Foundation takes an interactive approach to funding, collaborating closely with partners to develop projects aligned with our strategic goals. Each year, we create detailed plans for our multi-year programmes, using a range of funding methods, including grants, open calls, prizes, convening, advocacy, and direct action.

Rather than accepting unsolicited applications, we proactively identify potential partners through research, consultation, and network events. When a project aligns with our priorities, we work together to co-develop the proposal, set outcomes, and define measures of success. Occasionally, we issue open calls for applications, which are published on the Foundation’s website and shared with relevant audiences. We also value collaboration with other trusts, foundations, and stakeholders.

We do not accept unsolicited applications; however, we welcome initial inquiries if an organisation’s work aligns with our goals. Organisations may reach out with an introductory email describing their work and its alignment with our strategy. We ask that organisations refrain from sending full proposals unless invited, and we strive to respond to all inquiries in a reasonable timeframe.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Equity is a strategic priority for the Foundation. The UK Branch is committed to enhancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) across our grant-making, and this guides all aspects of our work. Our goal is to ensure our funding decisions are inclusive and reflective of the diverse communities our programmes aim to serve. Our Access to Culture and Climate and Ocean programmes specifically support initiatives that promote citizen involvement and address disparities in decision-making.

 Transparency

The foundation is committed to transparency, and we work with 360Giving to publish information about our grants. Using the 360Giving data standard, our awarded grants since 2013 are available here.
