Penetrable / Traversable / Habitable: Exploring Spatial Environments by Women Artists in the 1960s and 1970s

The international conference Penetrable / Traversable / Habitable: Exploring Spatial Environments by Women Artists in the 1960s and 1970s aims to explore, in a transcultural perspective, the mobilization of space in the work of women artists during the 1960s and 1970s, with a particular focus on the creation of environments.

The heterogeneous qualities of these artworks, their very diverse functioning – in articulation with a participating public –, different aesthetic as well as cultural and political inscriptions, suggest the need to think collectively, and in the context of feminist art historical scholarship, new exploratory categories for their apprehension.

The conference will count with the participation of keynote speakers Catherine de Zegher, Director of Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, in Belgium – curator of the important exhibition Inside the Visible: An Elliptical Traverse of Twentieth-Century Art in, of, and from the Feminine at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston in 1996 – and Jenni Sorkin, Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History at University of California – Santa Barbara, author of Live Form: Women, Ceramics and Community (University of Chicago Press, 2016) and co-curator of the exhibition Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947-2016 at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel gallery in Los Angeles in 2016. The discussion will involve several art historians and curators whose interventions will explore a wide variety of spatial practices by women artists.

The international conference Penetrable / Traversable / Habitable: Exploring spatial environments by women artists in the 1960s and 1970s is a joint initiative of the association Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions (AWARE) in Paris and the Institute of Art History of the NOVA University in Lisbon, in partnership with Centro de Arte Moderna – Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Presided by Camille Morineau, who previously worked as curator of the contemporary collections at musée national d’Art moderne – Centre Pompidou in Paris, AWARE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reintegrate women artists of the 20th century into the history of art.
