From my window

The second half of the 1970s witnessed a return to portraiture, particularly from the time of Escada’s stay at the Sanatório do Caramulo in 1977 and 1978. They are portraits of dogs, friends, and young men, in a moment that is gradually sealed in an internal universe, intimate and biographical, a closure that brings the sheet of paper with it as sleeping, doubled, cramped bodies are enclosed on it. It is a world that tended to be familiar: the Alto de Santo Amaro neighbourhood in Lisbon, his mother’s house, his bedroom-studio, (from) his window. A window that, in 1974, placed a green curtain over the spectacle of the world and would gradually open not outwards, but into the interior space of the bedroom-studio.
