Bardo Loops will be exhibited at Gasworks in London between April-June

The Foundation is supporting the first solo exhibition in the UK by Gabriel Abrantes, a Portuguese-American artist and filmmaker. Bardo Loops will be exhibited at Gasworks in London from 16 April until 14 June 2026.

Bardo Loops is a four-film installation in which animated ghosts converse in a dystopian future, ravaged by rains, floods and fires, on a never-ending loop. The ghosts mimic human behaviours and discuss topics that are both real and current, oblivious to the ongoing devastation around them, fully absorbed in their own personal dramas.

Two free tours of Bardo Loops are available for members of the public – a curator’s tour on 9 May and a Neighbourhood Breakfast Exhibition Tour on 20 May. Availability is limited and booking is highly recommend.

Bardo Loops was originally co-commissioned by the Foundation’s Modern Art Centre (CAM) in 2024. In this mini documentary filmed for CAM, Gabriel Abrantes talks about what inspired him to make Bardo Loops – his “most personal work ever” – and the process creating the films, from hand-painting with oil to programming the animations based on actors’ expressions.

Abrantes’ films confront historical, social and political themes through investigations of post-colonial, gender and identity questions. He has won multiple awards and premiered work at international festivals including the Cannes film festival and Venice Biennale. His solo exhibition of Bardo Loops further establishes his presence in the international contemporary arts scene.

Gasworks is a leading non-profit contemporary arts organisation in south London, known for nurturing emerging and underrepresented artists through studio residencies and first solo exhibitions.

The exhibition is accompanied by public screenings of Abrantes’ work at Barbican Cinema between 30-31 May.
