Our Grant-Making

Transnational collaboration for stronger arts and civil society ecosystems

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation promotes the development of individuals and organisations, through art, science, education, and charity, for a more equitable and sustainable society. Since its establishment in 1956, the UK Branch has contributed to the Foundation’s mission through a dedicated portfolio of grant-making activities and joint initiatives with other areas of the Foundation, external partners and other funders.

The UK Branch aims to strengthen arts and civil society ecosystems by supporting transnational exchange, reciprocal capacity development and knowledge sharing between Portugal and the UK. We focus on three core areas which are an evolution of our work to-date, and align with the Foundation’s core strategy.

The UK Branch collaborates on flagship initiatives of the Foundation, including the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity and the Alliance for Socially Engaged Arts to support their internationalisation.

We also dedicate resources to maximising the UK Branch building as a convening space for civil society partners through events, learning exchange projects, arts activations and more.
