The French director Jacques Demy, along with composer Michel Legrand, developed one of the greatest classics of European musical cinema, Les parapluies de Cherbourg. After a couple of fruitless attempts, upon which Legrand thought it best to abandon the project, Demy provided precious instructions to avoid a serious or operatic tone. His work, revealed Legrand to Télérama, magazine, consisted of “achieving the sublime with three notes, giving the audience the illusion that upon hearing the music for the first time, they knew it by heart.”
