Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, op. 43
In 1945, Benjamin Britten composed Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, having in mind an educational sound guide, for a young audience, to serve as intro to the several sounds and instruments of an orchestra. Britten composed thirteen variations and a fugue on a theme of Henry Purcell, one of his favourite composers. We worked each variation from a different section of the orchestra and from the exploration of its specific characteristics. Disconnected from the original documentary it was meant for, the music remains to this day one of the most captivating intros to the orchestra.
