Although its silhouette is still somewhat heavy, the exuberance of its decoration and the richness of its materials make this commode one of the most characteristic examples of the paradigm of luxury that the French decorative arts attained in this period.
The seventeenth century Japanese lacquer panels that cover it are in perfect harmony with the gilt bronze decoration. Asymmetry, movement, and elegance are what characterise these bronzes which, with decorative subtlety, conceal handles and keyholes, demonstrating the sophistication that this type of furniture attained.
The use of lacquered panels, commonly present in this type of furniture, demonstrates the taste for exoticism which was so prevalent at that time, as well as the quest for luxury and sophistication among the highest clientele at whom the furniture was aimed.
