The exhibition, which took place from 23 June to 30 October 2023, focused on the concept of ukiyo, which means ‘floating world’, and refers to the fleeting pleasures of everyday life. The city of Edo, modern-day Tokyo, was explored through two themes that illustrate the popular culture of the city at the time: female beauty, in the figure of the courtesan, and contemplation of the natural world.

Presenting exclusively works of art from the Gulbenkian Collection, this exhibition brought together a large number of Japanese prints from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and showed the public a lesser-known aspect of Calouste Gulbenkian as a collector of Japanese art.
