Arte & Moda

in portuguese

The catalogue accompanying the exhibition Art & Fashion, curated by Eloy Martínez de la Pera Celada, recreates the dialogues that can be established between fashion pieces and works of art.

Featuring an unpublished series of photographs by Basque photographer Jon Cazenave, the catalogue features renowned works from the Gulbenkian Collection together with leading figures from the fashion industry: Alexander McQueen and Rembrandt, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Van Dyck, or Hubert de Givenchy and André-Charles Boulle.

The curators of the Gulbenkian Museum revisited their collections for this ambitious catalogue, exploring the relationships between artworks from different periods and highlighting resonances between the visual arts and fashion design. Bárbara Coutinho, director of MUDE (Lisbon), Helena López de Hierro d’Aubarède, director of the Museo del Traje, (Madrid), Miquel Martínez Albero, of the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa, (Paris), and Vasco Queiró, a young gallery owner, were all invited to reflect on the history of fashion, fashion collecting and the potential for such collections to be displayed in museums.

The closure of the Museum for a complete renovation made the entire Gulbenkian Collection available for the conception of the exhibition, allowing a photography session to find connections that would be otherwise impossible to explore, thus making this catalogue a unique object.

Designed by Panorama Design Studio, this publication is a joint undertaking between the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and Ediciones El Viso.
