The silencing effect: the real-world impact of disinformation and online harms on European audiences
- Priority Area Multidisciplinary Investigations on Disinformation in Europe
- Year 2024, 2025
- Country United Kingdom
Most of us who use any form of social media will consider disinformation and online hate as we write or share a post, sometimes we may edit ourselves in fear of how our views will be received. A new project with The Syria Campaign and Data4Change will seek to understand the causes and impacts of self-censorship on human rights defenders and their work and on the wider public across Europe.
The Syria Campaign and Data4change’s Deadly Disinformation report identified ten real world impacts of disinformation on human rights defenders in Syria.
Now, partnering with human rights defenders from Palestine, Ukraine, and Syria, this new project will seek to protect public space for civil society to express solidarity with causes and campaigns for the protection of human rights. The data and insights gathered from the project will inform an online report and campaign, due to launch later this year.
The Syria Campaign is a small, fast-moving, and creative human rights organisation that advocates for a just, free and democratic Syria. Data4Change’s purpose is to defend human rights with data. Its vision is a world where data is inclusive and everyone can harness its power to spark positive change.
