Gabriel Abrantes: Bardo Loops at Gasworks

First solo exhibition in the UK by Portuguese-American artist

Gabriel Abrantes is an artist and filmmaker based in Lisbon. The Foundation is supporting his first solo exhibition in the UK with a grant of £12,500 to present Bardo Loops at Gasworks in London between 16 April – 14 June 2026.

The piece is a four-channel video installation in which animated ghosts living in a dystopian future ravaged by rains, floods and fires have conversations, fight, argue, cry, break up and have sex. These avatars cycle through topics that are both real and current, oblivious to the ongoing devastation around them, fully absorbed in their own personal dramas.

Bardo Loops was originally co-commissioned by the Foundation’s Modern Art Centre (CAM) in Lisbon, in 2024, and was shown at Collection Lambert in France.

The show will be accompanied by screenings of his feature and short films at Barbican Cinema.
