100 Creative Agents of Climate Change – In Place of War

In Place of War harnesses the power of the arts to inspire action and mobilise communities in places affected by conflict. Their latest initiative, 100 Creative Agents of Climate Change, focuses on empowering young people from climate-affected areas across the UK to create impactful arts campaigns advocating for climate action.

Recognised by UNESCO and awarded the Foundation’s 2022 Award for Civic Arts Organisations, In Place of War has a strong track record of using arts to drive social change. Their earlier initiative, 100 Agents of Change, connected grassroots youth organisations in the UK with networks in the Global South, building meaningful partnerships.

With funding from the Foundation, In Place of War is launching a pilot of 100 Creative Agents of Climate Change. This grant aligns with our Access to Culture and Climate and Ocean programmes, promoting citizen engagement, community empowerment, equity, and sustainability. Through this support, young people are trained to become community change-makers and climate advocates.

The project partners with youth organisations across the UK to engage 100 young people, providing them with training in climate literacy, creative activism, and advocacy. Participants will be connected to a global network of climate scientists, indigenous communities, cultural producers, and artists. This international exchange equips them with the skills to use the arts for community engagement and policy influence on climate issues.

As a key feature of the project, 10 participants will receive seed funding and ongoing mentorship to develop their own creative climate advocacy projects. These will culminate in showcase events and a policy roundtable in 2025, amplifying their voices and impact. A Youth Advisory Board, consisting of 10 participants from the project, will guide the programme’s development.

This initiative underscores the vital role of arts and culture in addressing the climate emergency and fostering social change. The Foundation’s support for In Place of War reflects our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and democratic cultural sector, while addressing urgent climate challenges through innovative and community-driven approaches.
