Home Theatre UK returns to London
We are supporting Home Theatre (UK) as it returns to London on 17 October after its initial success in 2013. Home Theatre is a bold international project led by Theatre Royal Stratford East, which will see 30 bespoke performances happening across people’s homes in London. Artists will take inspiration for their stories from the residents and more than half of these hosts will not be regular theatre goers. Alongside traditional homes, performances will take place at a rehabilitation home for female ex-offenders in Camden, a hospital ward for amputee patients in Wandsworth, care homes for the elderly in Stepney Green and a Newham-based homeless shelter.
Home Theatre was initially developed in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and is now slowly evolving into an international movement, spreading to locations such as South Africa and Birmingham, UK.
As a follow up to the performances, we will be supporting an all-day symposium at Theatre Royal Stratford East on 19 October. The symposium will explore the production of theatre for people’s homes. The day will consist of peer-to-peer learning, master classes, workshops and a panel discussion with a range of international Home Theatre practitioners from the UK, Brazil, and South Africa. This is an excellent opportunity for practitioners with an original perspective on Home Theatre or artists interested in learning more about the model. Those interested in taking part in the symposium should email: [email protected].
We are proud to be supporting this work as part of our Sharing the Stage strand, which aims to widen access to and participation among vulnerable and socially excluded groups in the performing arts.
