Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationPlanned as the overture for an opera that was inspired by the figure of the narrator of One Thousand and One Nights, Shéhérazade, ouverture de féerie is one of the first orchestral works by Maurice Ravel, rarely heard in public. The opera never came to fruition, only this excerpt remaining – although, after four years, Ravel returned to the theme to compose a song cycle inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov. The conductor is Alain Altinoglu, the young Frenchman of Armenian descent, much acclaimed for his recording of Mélodies, by Ravel and Duparc, with mezzo-soprano Nora Gubisch.
