A symbol of Turkish-Armenian reconciliation

Duration: 60 minutes without intermission

The music that Vardan Hovanissian and Emre Gültekin make together sounds like reconciliation between two peoples. Bringing together the tradition of the Armenian duduk and the Turkish saz, a wind instrument and a cordophone, the two musicians create music as beautiful as it is mysterious and a space of harmony indifferent to borders and the enforced separation between their cultures. They named their second album Karin after the two of them – a favourite on best-of-the-year lists among the world’s music of 2019. Karin is the former Armenian name for the town of Erzurum, now in Turkish territory.
