Among the many hundreds of pieces based on Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare’s theatrical classic, the French composer Charles Gounod’s opera is surely one of the most popular and most performed worldwide. Romeo and Juliet followed another hugely successful adaptation by Gounod, Faust (by Goethe), and he worked on both with the same team of librettists. The stage version presented at Gulbenkian Music will be directed by Vincent Huguet, a close collaborator of Patrice Chéreau, whose broad, enviable reputation is closely linked to the opera.
