Olivier Messiaen

Quartet for the end of time
(for violin, cello, clarinet and piano)
Total approximate duration: 120 min.

Captured in the service of the French army in 1939, Olivier Messiaen ended up composing one of the most significant pieces of chamber music of the 20th century in the Görlitz prison camp. The Quartet for the End of Time, inspired by the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, would be written for the instruments at Messiaen’s disposal and would be premiered in Görlitz in front of hundreds of prisoners and guards. Regarding the premiere of a piece capable of creating beauty in a tragic situation, the composer is said to have never been “listened to with such attention and understanding”.
