Joseph Haydn

The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, for string quartet, op. 51
Total approximate duration: 70 min. / Concert without intermission

In 1786, when he was at the peak of his artistic powers, Joseph Haydn accepted a commission to compose the music that would accompany the Good Friday liturgy in the Church of Santa Cueva in Cádiz. Specifically, the proposal required the composer to write a series of pieces evoking The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross – a title he adopted himself – based on the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John. The result, of enormous musical and emotional depth, was later adapted for string quartet, a set of seven pieces performed here by the excellent Cuarteto Quiroga.
