Four Last Songs

Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 2, in D major, op. 73

It is said that with his dying breath Richard Strauss said: “dying is just the way I composed it in Death and Transfiguration”, one of his most famed and magnificent compositions. In the Four Last Songs, considered Strauss’ artistic epitaph, the song Im Abendrot retakes the theme and helps complete a remarkable creative cycle of song composition, started at six and only ended at 84, one year before the composer’s death. The perfect occasion to visit this artistic universe by the hand of conductor Nuno Coelho and soprano Camilla Nylund.
