Francisco Tropa
Lives and works in Lisbon. Attended drawing in Ar.Co, Lisbon.
Tropa not only creates objects, but he also elaborates the specific constellations of reference in which they are ideally read. His complex practice, which includes sculpture, performance, photography, drawing, and printing making, is thoroughly grounded in the history of media he uses, ancient art, philosophy and literature, as well as classical themes such as the memento mori, ritual, gambling, and time. He therefore seeks origins, to understand and represent the timeless and essential qualities of art. He was the Official Portuguese Representation on the 54th Venice Biennale, and participated on the Rennes Biennale (2012), the Istanbul Biennale (2011), the Manifesta (2000), the Melbourne Biennale (1999) and the São Paulo Biennale (1999). His last solo exhibition was made at Ladri, Galleria Alessandra Bonomo, Rome. His work is represented in all the most important contemporary art collections in Portugal.
