Documental display with some of the books from the Collector's private library that attest to his interest in Egypt

Alongside the Pharaohs Superstars exhibition, this display shows some of the books from the Collector’s private library that demonstrate his interest in Egypt, its history, and its art.

Among this set are valuable books such as Views in Egypt, from the original drawings in the possession of Sir Robert Ainslie […], of 1801, acquired by Gulbenkian at auction, study books on the history of the Near Eastern civilizations and their peoples, such as Gaston Maspero’s Histoire ancienne des peuples de l’Orient Classique, and also practical guides for travellers such as Egypt and the Sûdân: Handbook for travellers: with 106 maps and plans, and 56 woodcuts.

In addition to this set of books there is a nucleus of documentation that reveals not only details about the acquisition of pieces from Calouste Gulbenkian’s Egyptian art collection but also the relationship that the Collector established with the Egyptologist Howard Carter, his advisor on some of the acquisitions.
