EMIF Surpasses 100 Projects

Three years after its launch, the European Media Innovation Fund (EMIF) has achieved a significant milestone, funding over 100 projects across Europe aimed at countering and understanding the disinformation phenomenon and promoting media literacy. This achievement highlights the fund's crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of information in Europe.

EMIF has allocated a substantial portion (95%) of its initial grant allocation, totalling €17,444,252.80, to support these projects. This funding has enabled 226 organizations in 27 European countries to work on fact-checking, research, investigations, and media literacy initiatives. The diverse range of projects funded includes fact-checking organizations, universities, civil society organizations, media outlets, and more, creating a vibrant and interconnected community within the European information ecosystem. Additionally, EMIF funds scholarships, and fellowships for scholars and professionals studying and working on the phenomenon of disinformation at the European University Institute (EUI)

One of the key strengths of EMIF is its ability to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among the projects it supports. As Javier Luque, Project Manager for the Disinformation Playbook, noted, “The Fund provided us with the time and flexibility to nurture a community of experts who can exchange ideas and challenge our methodologies.” This collaborative environment has contributed to strongly improve societal resilience and situational awareness through a sustained production of fact-checks, investigations and thematic studies, as well as well-targeted media literacy initiatives. It also ed to the development of valuable resources, such as fact-checking tools, media literacy games, and guidebooks, that can be used by organisations, professionals, and individuals across Europe. These resources amplify the impact of EMIF’s funding, ensuring that its benefits reach far beyond the 103 projects supported and contributing to a more resilient and informed European information ecosystem.
