Tiling studies

This collection comprises publications with texts by authors from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a set of unpublished studies carried out by the research team of the DigiTile project.

The works published between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century are by authors who began studies on Portuguese tiles and ceramics, such as José Queirós, Virgílio Correia, Gabriel Pereira and Joaquim de Vasconcelos.

The unpublished studies by contemporary art historians were carried out as part of the DigiTile project. Using as a starting point eight essays from the Santos Simões collection – complementary to the Corpus da Azulejaria Portuguesa – the research team produced a set of texts. These texts had as subject of study the Iconography of Lisbon in Tiles; Images of Saints in Tiles; Altar fronts with tiles; Heraldic tiles; Ornamental grammar of Portuguese tiles; Convento dos Cardais and the Handbook of tiles.

In addition to these, other recent studies published on the theme of tiles are presented, authored or not by the team of researchers involved in the DigiTile project.
