“Diaspora: Critical Reviews”

A Broadcast Series on Western Armenian Literary Culture
22 nov 2024

The Armenian Communities Department is happy to share the impactful journey of Diaspora: Critical Reviews, a broadcast series created by Boon TV to explore and discuss Western Armenian literary culture. The series, transmitted through various social media channels and television, delves into the key milestones and ongoing challenges that have shaped the vibrant and diverse Armenian Diaspora over the last century.

Diaspora: Critical Reviews, invites viewers to journey through an in-depth examination of post-genocide Diaspora literature, uncovering the contributions of both established and emerging Western Armenian writers and intellectuals. The series extends beyond a narrow definition of literature, touching on topics pertaining to diasporan culture in general, including language vitality, the interplay between Western and Eastern Armenian, and the challenges faced by writers within the Diaspora. Each episode offers unique perspectives on how the Armenian language and culture have evolved over time, how they have been preserved, adapted, and shared across generations and continents.

The series marked an innovation for Boon TV as well, using a new format and technical upgrades to directly engage experts, academics and writers from outside of Armenia. This helped create a unique platform connecting professional circles in Armenia and the Diaspora, fostering stronger collaborations and meaningful discussions that will resonate with students, researchers and anyone invested in Diaspora literature.

The new Diaspora: Critical Reviews series comes as the continuation of a previous initiative dedicated to understanding the Diaspora, which was broadcast in 2022. It was a 20-episode informative and analytical television, radio and online programme about the Armenian Diaspora called “Diaspora Series.”

We are happy to announce that our collaboration with the Boon Scientific Cultural Foundation will continue within the framework of creating quality, informative and interesting content about the Diaspora. In 2024-2025, an animation series dedicated to Western Armenian and Diasporan literature will be created. Aimed at younger audiences, the new series will adopt a format that is more immediate, relatable, and easier to disseminate. The short animated episodes will cover the work of the most prominent Armenian writers of the Diaspora.
