Armine, Sister premiere in Lisbon

21-23 November at Teatro Ibérico
13 nov 2017

“Armine, Sister” is a performance, created by the Polish theater company Teatr ZAR, which addresses the destruction of the Armenian people in Anatolia at the beginning of the 20th century, along with the history of silence and responsibility surrounding genocide. The title, “Armine, Sister“, recalls the first two words of a letter with no clear address, which is doomed to drift around in time and space. The play explores what it means to be a witness, and what witnessing means to us today, confronting the audience with the dilema of “witnessing after witnessing.”

Armenian, Iranian, and Kursish artists and singers join Teatr Zar in this performance. The group kept the musical focus on Armenian liturgical traditions – from Istanbul’s monodic traditions through Ekmalian’s and Komitas’ notated versions of some traditional melodies – complementing them with Eastern singing traditions, including Persian and Kurdish.

“Armine, Sister” has been presented in Paris, Rome, Florence, Oslo, Los Angeles and will be staged in Lisbon at Teatro Ibérico between 21 and 23 of November.

The staging of the performance in Lisbon, Portugal, is supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
