Academic Conference on the Armenian Diaspora in Russia

23 jun 2016

The Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is sponsoring an academic conference on the Armenian Diaspora in the Russian Federation, organised by the Department of Diaspora Studies of the Yerevan State University. It will be held on 13-14 October 2016 in Yerevan.

The aim of the conference is to encourage research on, and learn about, the largest Armenian diasporan community. Remarkably, there is limited research on this topic, despite the fact that there are over a million Armenians living in Russia.

The themes of the conference are:

  1. Armenians in the Russian Federation in the contemporary period: an overview
  2. The organizational structure of the Armenian communities in the Russian Federation
  3. Comparison of the “New Diaspora” and “Traditional Diaspora”
  4. Relations with the Republic of Armenia
  5. The issue of identity among Russian-Armenians
  6. Armenian educational and cultural institutions in the Russian Federation
  7. The role of religious institutions, especially the Armenian Apostolic Church, in the Russian Armenian Diaspora

The deadline for proposals is 30 July. For further information and application procedure see the following links:
