Levon Mouradian

Cello

Levon Mouradian won 2nd Prize and the Silver Medal at the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition in 1985. In 1986, he won the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, and in 1997 he won 1st Prize for cello in the Concurso de Instrumentos de Arco Júlio Cardona in Covilhã.

He made his public debut at the age of ten, winning 1st Prize for Interpretation in a contest for young musicians held in Armenia. At the age of fourteen he played solo in public, performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the Armenian Symphony Orchestra conducted by D. Khandjian. He has also performed as a soloist with the most important orchestras in the Soviet Union under the direction of eminent conductors such as V. Gergiev, G. Rozhdestvensky, D. Kakhidze and Vag Papian. He has performed in concert in several European countries, the United States of America, Japan, Israel and Brazil.

He was Professor of cello and chamber music in the University of Évora and regularly directed courses in cello and chamber music.

He has performed both as a soloist and as a member of chamber music ensembles at important international festivals, notably Munich (Nachtsücke), Tallinn (David Oistrakh), Weikersheim, St. Petersburg, Santander, Burgos and Cangas de Onis, as well as major festivals in Portugal. He has recorded several CDs with a classic and contemporary repertoire, particularly the works of Armenian composers. Levon Mouradian plays a Venetian cello from the 18th century.
