British conductor Leo Hussain has established himself as a leading interpreter in hisgeneration of Mozart, the second Viennese school and great 20th centurymasterpieces, breathing life into new scores and bringing fresh perspective toprogramming the core romantic repertoire with his musical intellect and curiosity. Hewas formerly Music Director of the Opéra de Rouen and Salzburg Landestheater, andnow conducts many of the world’s top orchestras and opera houses.

Forthcoming European highlights this season include debuts with the OrchestrePhilharmonique du Luxembourg and Gulbenkian Orchestra, a return to Oper Frankfurtand a new production of Berg Wozzeck at Theater an der Wien, where he conductsmost seasons, working with the Wiener Symphoniker and ORF Vienna RadioSymphony Orchestra. These follow recent performances with the Bamberg Symphonyat Mozartfest Würzburg, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, DSO Berlin, DeutscheRadio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Prague Philharmonia and RoyalDanish Orchestra. Outside Europe he has conducted the NHK Symphony Orchestraand the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra at the Tokyo Spring Festival, andmakes debuts this season at the West Australian and Tasmanian symphonyorchestras alongside his future debut at San Francisco Opera.

In 2016 he made his critically acclaimed debut at the Royal Opera House, CoventGarden with Enescu Oedipe, described by the Sunday Times as “a musicalperformance of overwhelming impact” and leading to an immediate re-invitation. Othernotable operatic successes include Strauss Capriccio for Santa Fe Opera, Britten TheRape of Lucretia for Glyndebourne Festival Opera and productions at La Monnaie,English National Opera, and the Bavarian and Berlin state operas. He enjoys a strongrelationship with the George Enescu Festival with recent concert performances of Berg Wozzeck and Schoenberg Gurrelieder.

Early success at the Salzburg Festival, where he assisted Simon Rattle and theBerliner Philharmoniker, and Valery Gergiev and the Vienna Philharmonic, led toworldwide symphonic debuts and close working relationships with these and otherconductors including Daniel Barenboim and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Leo Hussainstudied at Cambridge University and London’s Royal Academy of Music.
