Christian Gerhaher

Baritone

During his studies under Paul Kuen and Raimund Grumbach, German baritone Christian Gerhaher attended the Opera School of the Academy of Music in Munich and, together with Gerold Huber, studied lied interpretation with Friedemann Berger. While completing his medical studies Christian Gerhaher perfected his vocaltraining in master-classes given by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Inge Borkh. At present Christian Gerhaher himself teaches occasionally in select master-classes and is an honorary professor at the Academy of Music in Munich. Heholds the title Bayerischer Kammersänger, is an honorary professor at the Munich Academy of Music and Theatre and bearer of the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art.

Christian Gerhaher’s exemplary lied interpretations with Gerold Huber set standards and their recordings have received many awards, a.o. the BBC Music Award and the Nachtigall, the honorary prize of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik. The lied album Nachtviolen, issued in 2014, received the Gramophone Classical Music Award 2015 in the solo vocal category.

Christian Gerhaher has performed together with conductors such as wie Simon Rattle, Daniel Harding, Herbert Blomstedt, Bernard Haitink, Christian Thielemann, Kirill Petrenko, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, Andris Nelsons, Kent Nagano and Mariss Jansons in the world’s major concert halls. Major orchestras which regularly invite Christian Gerhaher to perform include the LondonSymphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, and in particularthe Berlin Philharmonic, where he was the first ever singer to be artist in residence,as well as the Swedish and especially the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Together with this ensemble, conducted by Daniel Harding, Christian Gerhaher recorded his first album of arias devoted to opera in the German Romantic era and for which he received the International Opera Award 2013. In the meantime another opera recital was issued on CD in 2015: Mozart Arias accompanied by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.

In the field of opera, Christian Gerhaher has performed a.o. at the Oper Frankfurt, the Vienna State Opera, the Theater an der Wien, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London as well as at the Festivals of Salzburg, Edinburgh, and Lucerne. For his interpretations as Prinz von Homburg and Wolfram in Vienna and Munich he was voted „Singer of the Year“ by the magazine „Opernwelt“ and he received the prestigious „Laurence livier Award“ for his dramatic performance. His interpretation of Pelléas (Pélleas et Mélisande) he was awarded the Deutsche Theaterpreis „Der Faust“.
