After composing his first opera, Play: Episodes in Subspace (2016), commissioned by the Gulbenkian Foundation, the London composer Jamie Man will return to the Grand Auditorium with another work that explores the poetic mystery of human existence through music. In Zelle, her new chamber opera, everything begins with the police interrogation of a woman, but the stage immediately becomes a place populated by constant contradictions in which Man explores references such as Masao Yamamoto’s photography, David Lynch’s films and Noh theatre. From the dialogue between these different references, an unexpected new landscape then emerges.
