Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationWaltraud Meier caused a sensation in Bayreuth in 1983 with her triumphant interpretation of Kundry in Wagner’s Parfisal. She quickly became known as a top Wagnerian, and she cemented that status with Tristan and Isolde: “Over the last 20 years (…) Ms. Meier has been Isolde and Isolde has been Ms. Meier”, The New York Times wrote in 2015, when the singer said goodbye to the role. After giving us such a memorable interpretation of the Wesendonck Lieder by Wagner last season, Meier returns to sing Mahler, notably the two sublime Lieder cycles set to poems by Friedrich Rückert.
