Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Symphony No. 6, in B minor, op. 74, Pathétique
Peter Mattei has long been established as one of the most stimulating baritones worldwide. The Swedish singer stood out after the rendition of Don Giovanni staged by Austrian director Michael Haneke, having since been reputed as expert in Mozart. Nevertheless, in this concert he will perform Mahler’s demanding cycle Kindertotenlieder, composed from F. Rückert’s poems, enhancers of dramatic and, not seldom, tragic musical language. Led by Latvian conductor Andris Poga, who on his debut at Gulbenkian Music will conduct two of Tchaikovsky’s iconic symphonic pieces.
