There may have been some rivalry between two central figures of Czech music, Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, although it is also suggested that there was a disciple-master relationship between them. This programme brings out the many common features that bound them together: in the symphonic poem Vltava, Smetana musically portrays his native Bohemia, in particular the course of the River Vltava, while Dvořák’s Silent Woods is part of a cycle inspired by the forest in the same region. They offer a way of hearing how Nature can come to life in music.
