Giuseppe Verdi
A profound admirer of Shakespeare, whom he regarded as ‘the great investigator of the human heart’, Giuseppe Verdi could not resist the challenge of transforming one of the English playwright’s masterpieces into music. Thus was born Otello, for many the most splendid tragedy in Italian opera, a miraculous union of musical and dramatic qualities. The story of the Moorish general in the service of Venice, his marriage to Desdemona and the manipulative Iago is broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera in this production starring Brian Jagde, Ailyn Pérez and Artur Ruciński in the principal roles.
