Piano Sonata No. 2, in G-sharp minor, op. 19, “Sonata-Fantasia”
Nikolai Lugansky was only 19 years old when, by way of a cancellation, his piano teacher asked him if he could prepare for a Rachmaninov piano concerto within a month. Lugansky accepted and memorised the music sheet in three days. The musician explained this extraordinary feat by saying that, just like when in love with someone, it is easy to remember the characteristics of the object of affection. That is the intensity that the Russian pianist lends to every repertory rendered, having now developed a very special relationship with Debussy’s work.
