Nelson Goerner notes that his career began in 1986 when Martha Argerich returned to Argentina after a long absence. Goerner was 16 and watched Argerich’s concert and rehearsal in Buenos Aires, after which he was asked to play for the great star with other young pianists. After his rendition of a piece by Liszt, Goerner was contacted by Argerich and offered a scholarship to study in Europe. That same year, he would also win the Liszt Competition, clear signs of his enlightened relationship with the work of the Hungarian composer.
