Composed in the closing years of the 19th century, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 is a work of enormous ambition and great breath, inspired by literary works by Friedrich Nietzche and the popular songbook Das himmlische Leben, and reflecting on Nature and the way Man relates to it. Directing the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, the Gulbenkian Choir and mezzo-soprano Elena Zhidkova will be Jonathan Nott, a conductor whose top-notch recording of this symphony was described by BBC Music Magazine as “magnificent”.
