Thomas Adès’s Piano Concerto was composed in 2018 for the pianist Kirill Gerstein. Since its premiere in Boston last year, it has been acclaimed by the critics. The New York Times called it a “breathless” concerto that was “zesty and accessible”. The Concerto will be premiered in Portugal by Gerstein in a programme also featuring The Song of the Earth, Mahler’s celebrated and melancholic orchestral song cycle. Inspired by Chinese poems, it meditates on key aspects of life and nature and how we deal with them throughout our lives.
