The great romantic repertoire is deeply imprinted in Harding’s career, and it was Mahler’s 2nd Symphony that marked his farewell as a trumpet player in the National Youth Orchestra to dedicate himself to conducting. Indeed, it was not long before his brash style conquered audiences and persuaded them that music should always sound rapturous and furiously passionate.
