Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms, Bach

András Schiff believes that some parts of the piano repertoire should wait for the right age. Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations should not be approached in one’s youth, just as his 32 sonatas require, in Schiff’s view, considerable life experience so that all their immense musicality can be drawn out. Schiff waited until he was 50 to tackle Beethoven’s sonatas. He has played 20 complete cycles and therefore developed a relationship of increasingly deep understanding with the pieces.
