The Art Deco style made its mark at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. Among the various pavilions presented on this occasion, the standout example was the Hôtel du Collectionneur designed by the decorator Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, a key name in the movement, who worked with the architect Pierre Patout on the project. Antoine Bourdelle, Joseph Bernard, Jean Dunand and Edgar Brandt also participated in this space, a triumph of luxury in a decade of optimism.
Installed in front of the building, and sparking great enthusiasm among visitors, was this sculptural group in homage to the Renaissance sculptor Jean Goujon (c. 1510–c. 1572). The work represents Diana hunting with a buck at her feet, flanked by nymphs. Janniot chose to add polychrome to the hair of the stylised figures he sculpted for this evocation of classical sculpture. The work was acquired by Calouste Gulbenkian in 1939 for his Les Enclos estate, in Normandy, although it was never installed there.
