This diadem in the form of a free-standing cockerel’s head, made of gold, horn and enamel, holds a cut amethyst in its beak. This piece is remarkable for its delicate treatment of the crest and corals, in fine gold mesh, as well as the enamel work in iridescent tones of blue and green, so characteristic of Lalique’s jewellery. The diadem’s comb, made of horn, is joined with a gold hinge.
This jewel was displayed at the 1900 Paris Exposition and helped to cement Lalique’s reputation. On that occasion, the diadem also incorporated an enormous yellow diamond in the beak, still present when Gulbenkian acquired the piece directly from the artist in 1904.
