Silk fabrics, enriched with metallic thread, as with this coat, were often used in the manufacture of ceremonial garments for the ruling classes.

There are countless miniatures from the period in which high-ranking figures can be seen wearing garments such as this one. These precious fabrics were extremely expensive and only accessible to the elite, which made them a sign of power and wealth. This type of coat is thought to have been influenced by Mughal India and may be associated with the visit of Mughal embassies to Persia. Floral motifs were ever-present in the textile production of the time, such as this piece decorated with birds as well as flowers.

The shape and the use of buttons on the sleeves and chest are distinctively Persian. In winter, this type of garment was often trimmed with furs around the neck.
