Jerusalem: Faith and Power
In the first video of this series, curator André Afonso tells us about the works of art sent to the Holy Land, to be housed in its most famous place of devotion: the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.
According to the Christian faith, Jerusalem was the site of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. For this reason, Emperor Constantine (c. 272–337) ordered the construction of several temples in this territory. Since then, countless European Catholic monarchs have made substantial gifts to these sanctuaries, symbols of their faith and power.
